Some interesting posts

A couple of interesting posts:
  • Looks like Jams has a treasure trove of thoughts up there. Read what he has to say about the behaviour of Indians in elevators
  • Me ra is in fine form here. Read on to understand what she feels about the new India and the profound questions she raises. Very thoughtful indeed!

Alternate Sexuality!

Now this is one topic on which I have not written anything till date! Not that I consider alternate sexuality a taboo, but there has not been a compelling reason till date for me to write on a topic like that!
I have always been an ardent reader of the New Indian Express. It has been my most preferred Indian Newspaper in English langugage for years together now. The newspaper has had a face lift every now and then, but the recent facelift it had was something that impressed me no end! Excellent look with titbits thrown all over the newspaper and excerpts from the various blogs on the blogosphere on varied topics, the newspaper has really taken to what one may call community journalism by giving a chance to readers also to report as well as share thoughts on important news items.
With this face lift, came a new Saturday magazine called "Zeitgeist". It has been 4- 6 weeks since the magazine has been in circulation and what I have been observing is that the magazine has been devoted completely to reports on gaming, graphic novels and homosexuality. Gaming (Playstation, Xbox kind) has never interested me and hence, I am not able to comment on how popular or otherwise it is. Graphic novels, they say, is on its way to becoming extremely popular. I havent seen many people on this side of the globe taking any active interest in this nor have I come across many such books in the local bookshops either.
The third item here is Homosexuality. While this has been a burning topic, considered a taboo by many and almost always discussed in hushed tones behind closed doors, it requires some amount of guts to bring discussions on this topic to the mainstream- something that I would like the Express publications group to appreciate on but of late, I have a feeling that they are taking this a bit too far.
There are at least 5 columns on sexuality- 3 by women and 2 by transsexuals. Now with a 2 page content on "Sexuality" and the 5 columns divided almost equally between women and transsexuals, a fairly sensible reader can predict what one is likely to see. Yes, you guessed it right- unabashed male bashing!!! I dont completely argue that the men in India are perfect gentlemen- there are quite a few perverted, oversexed men who dont leave a chance to grab, mob or finger a woman or make lewd comments to a woman. If it is a transsexual, the merrier. It only gets murkier and dirtier!
While I am completely on agreement on the above, what I would like to bring to everyone's attention is that not all men are like that. There definitely are people who are sympathetic towards the fairer sex and transsexuals- who understand what goes through them everytime they are subject to something like this and are also ready to voice their support whenever they are in times of need. The interests of that category is completely eliminated in the magazine and the menfolk in totality is being frowned upon through the 5- odd columns appearing in the magazine.
Another thing that comes to my mind is the declining interest of the readers in the content of the columns given their nature and predictability- the columnists are interested in narrating the encounters that they have had with perverted men in Ludhiana, London or Luxemberg and try to underline the statement- "Men will always be men". Fine, we know that but when will you start writing something different?
The third and the most important reason why I am unhappy about "Zeitgeist" is the unnecessary emphasis it places on Homosexuality and transsexuals. It definitely is something that is considered abnormal in our society and they are definitely a targeted group. While I completely agree that as a society we are not mature enough to accept the sexual preferences of people the way they are, I would like to emphasize that by giving it undue importance in its magazine, the New Indian Express is also treading the same path! Why dont you guys start considering it as something normal and report it at, lets say, a very normal frequency- twice in a month or so rather than carrying 5 stories on the same topic week after week as if you are trying to tell the world- look here, we do have our share of skeletons in the closet!
A definitely welcome step in this direction would be to introduce a column by a man on sexuality, reduce the number of columns by women and also to reduce the number of columns by transsexuals from 2 to 1 (you can keep Rose, I prefer her to Chameli!). This way, week after week, the readers can understand how a man, a woman and a transsexual looks at things and how perceptions differ based on sexual preferences!
Also, that would be the best way to tell the world that in India, a transsexual is as normal as a man or a woman and there is no need for anyone to frown at them... what say?

Most Anticipated...

It is that time of the year again! The time to look back on what one has been doing all through the past one year, the time to anticipate what you will be hearing from the person who matters the most and how to counter his/ her arguements, the time to estimate what will be handed over to you in that sealed envelope that seals your fate for the next one year... It is the time of Annual Performance Appraisals at office! Time to look back on what I have done/ not done in the past one year and also to deliberate on how to convert every activity of mine into something positive- It is also the time to tell all team members how well they have been performing or otherwise and what to expect or not to expect out of the appraisal system this time! It definitely is not an easy job being either- the appraiser or the appraisee. However, the silver lining is the sealed envelope that one will get at the end of all this! The carrot that will be provided after being hit with the stick all along :-) A reason other than monsoons for me to look forward to July- whether it is going to be substantial rain or a minor drizzle for me- only time can tell!

IPL Frenzy!!!

Guys, the IPL is reaching its semi final stage. Rajasthan Royals (the underdogs) and Kings XI Punjab (Read Yuvi, Deepumon) have finalized their semi final berths. With yesterday's match, looks like Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Daredevils are going to join the fray!
With some excellent players and very well managed teams, the last round of IPL matches are definitely going to be worth the kind of money being spent on them! My best bet is on Kings XI Punjab holding the IPL trophy though I am no fan of the owners, Mr. Wadia and Ms. Zinta! I am anticipating Rajasthan Royals and Kings to battle it out in the finals and Kings winning over Royals in the ultimate match.
Anyways, keeping my fingers crossed! Similar thoughts, anyone???

Fake Swamis!!!

Time for yet another controversy- a very shameful one at that! Available above are the photographs of the most famous people these days in Kerala- Santhosh Madhavan alias Swami Amrithachaithanya and Himaval Maheshwara Bhadranandaji alias Ernakulam Swami!
While the former is interested in molesting minor girls with the help of some prominent names in the fields of culture, police and politics; the latter propogates peace and non- violence while carrying a pistol himself! The fun is that both these fake swamis rose to enviable stages of public support and attention in less than 5 years and have a mammoth following of admirers from all strata of the society! It finally took an Interpol enquiry to bring out their anti- social activities to the spotlight and after a lot of hype, hooplah and drama, the fake swamis have been brought to book by the state police! However, considering the fact that both the swamis have a lot of business going on with the top officials in the department and the home minister's family itself, one wonders what all this drama is going to finally end up with!!!
All this is another example of the sinister mindset of the Kerala society and the sense of false morality that has always been prevalent here! I dont think this kind of shameful association would be seen anywhere else in the world where the high ranked officials of the law and order department join hands with criminals in activities as nauseating as molesting minor girls! Santhosh Madhavan has also functioned as a five star pimp what with arranging television and movie actresses for the socialities who matter but his smartness lies in the fact that he had filmed all those activities and the CD's were safely stored in a bank locker- can you beat that?
It is encouraging that for the time being such criminals under the garb of swamis have been brought to book but no one knows what is going to be the outcome. Let us hope that the extensive media coverage that these issues have received work to the society's benefit in this case, for a change.
However, we cannot obviate the fact that this throws up serious questions on the direction towards which the Kerala society is moving. Probably, this is nothing but the logical outcome of the suppressed sexual desires of a society that has for long been governed by the cloak of false morality! All we can do is to raise both our hands towards the sky and pray to the almighty that innocent, young kids are protected from such kind of ills plaguing the society these days! Amen!!!

Musical Kochi!

And that day is here finally- the FM channels have started broadcast from Kochi and now it is time for another kind of sky- war! Mathrubhoomi's Club FM (94.3 Mhz) and Manorama's Mango FM (91.9 Mhz) started off broadcasting with effect from Saturday, 17 May 2008! Add to that the fact that SFM has started its test broadcast and it is reason to cheer for all Kochiites!
And while I am typing this out listening alternatively to Club and Mango, I am looking forward to the day Sun group's SFM, Asianet's FM channel and Radio Joy Alukkas also start broadcasts and it is going to be non stop music to the ears of all Kochiites!
Yes, I'm definitely loving it!!!

2 years of LDF Ministry!

I am not writing this post because I feel it is reason to celebrate and congratulate the team of ministers lead by V S Achuthanandan, instead it is out of the irritation that arises out of the fact that keralites will have to suffer this ministry for at least 3 more years and considering the hot and happening 2 year rule of the ministry, I am wondering what would be left of this state by the time the next round of legislative assembly elections are announced!
The New Indian Express rose to the occassion and conducted a poll on who is the worst minister in the LDF government? I too wanted to cast a vote but I felt it was not right on my part to single out any one minister as the worst. However, the readers thought otherwise and consequent to the fabulous response to the poll, the results were out!
M A Baby was crowned the worst minister for having brought about the sorry state of affairs in the education sector- there is not even a single thing that can be pointed out as a positive step taken by Mr. Baby. The less said about the cultural ministry, the better.
P K Sreemathy teacher was a close second. Ill health has been plaguing the health sector ever since Ms. Sreemathy assumed charge. The government's lack lustre efforts in dealing with the chikungunya epidemic, the microbial infection in the gynaecology department of SUT Hospital and the ongoing medico strike in the state are the major achievements of Ms. Sreemathy. Apparently, her daughter in law is her personal assistant which is making things worse!
The coveted third prize goes to the foul mouthed G Sudhakaran who demonstrated very clearly how a statesman should not be behaving! A totally uncouth man, he is culturally much below the head load workers you find in the Ernakulam market. If he had channeled all the energy that he wastes in talking, in tackling the problems plaguing Sabarimala, things would have been much better all around!
Now this does not mean that the others can be left scot free and here is why:
Kodiyeri Balakrishnan- the home minister houses the most notorious goonda in the state now- his own son Bineesh Kodiyeri. Add to that his alleged unholy partnerships with the fake swamis- Santhosh Madhavan and Swami Bhadranandaji, one feels sorry for the law and order situation in the state!
C Divakaran- the celebrated food minister who is all set to change the food habits of the people in Kerala on account of the rice scarcity and soaring food grain prices prevalent in the state
Thomas Isaac- who follows the book but has failed to apply his theories into practice in controlling the financial sector in the state
Mullakkara Rathnakaran living in fool's heaven and not even taking a single step in putting things in order as far as the agriculture sector is concerned
Paloly Mohammedkutty- no one knows what the Local Self Administration Minister is into these days
and finally V S Achuthanandan- the celebrated Chief Minister who is riding a rudder less boat! No one knows where this rule is heading to!
I have lost hope but do we have a choice but to wait till the next elections are announced? I am looking forward to that day because I am all set to write the obituary of LDF rule in Kerala!

Kuruvi is an endless torture!

What disappointed me all through while sitting through Kuruvi was the fact that the last time Vijay- Trisha- Dharani came together was for the immensely entertaining "Ghilli". In comparison "Kuruvi" is a study on what not to do in a movie. It has every cliche in it that one can think about- a hero who bashes up two dozen henchmen each of whom are three times his size, a dreamy eyed heroine who breaks into a duet everytime she sees the hero, the hero being projected as a messiah of the masses by his father as well as the entire population available on the frame, a blood thirsty villain who is as ruthless as it can get and a host of comic book characters who have nothing much to do but sing hosannahs to the hero!!!
Music has always been the strong point of Vijay movies but here Vidyasagar cheats big time! Every other department does a routine job and do not deserve a mention here. The performances are over the top, banal and cartoonish. Vivek's comedy track does not evoke any laughs. Trisha looks dull and Vijay's energy does nothing to save the film from being a complete disaster. Kuruvi puts one to sleep in spite of the fact that at least 30 minutes have been edited out by the theatre authorities.
Stay away guys! Gilli in its 25th run or Pokkiri in its 501st run would be infinitely entertaining as compared to this one!!!

Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal could have been better!

Vivek Agnihotri's "Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal" (DDDG) is yet another sports movie that celebrates the victory of the underdogs over the establishment- a story that is as old as the hills and that sports movies have been religiously following ever since any one can remember. The only difference here is that DDDG is set in London's Southall and hence, comments on racial differences as well.
Southall United Football club is the first all Asian football club in London that is suffering due to lack of funds and sponsorship. Success has eluded the club for more than 20 years and the football ground owned by the club is being used for hosting wedding reception. The town council decides to take possession of the ground and convert it into a shopping centre for the benefit of the community. This is bad news for the passionate team captain Shaan (Arshad Warsi) who decides to bring in Tony (Boman Irani) to coach the team.
He manages to convince Tony and things start rolling. Shaan's sister Ramona (Bipasha Basu) joins in as the team doctor; the local hair saloon steps in as the sponsor and Indian boy Sunny (John Abraham) is brought in as the striker. How after petty conflicts, misunderstandings and some difficulties, Southall United manages to win the English Premier League is what the rest of the movie is all about.
For any sports movie to be entertaining, what one needs is a racy script and fast paced narrative style. DDDG fails in both these counts- there is prima facie nothing wrong with the script or the direction. The only hitch is that everything takes its own sweet little time to happen forcing the audience to yawn their way through the movie. Add to it, there are no punchy dialogues or inspiring songs and what you get is a half baked narrative- a complete no- no as regards a sports movie is concerned.
Technically, the movie is first rate. Performance wise, John Abraham disappoints. He knows very well to juggle a football and he looks slim, trim and hot playing Sunny Bhasin. But, he lacks the vigour, spirit and passion that is so very important while playing the protagonist in a sports movie- and these are things Boman Irani displays in plenty. Arshad Warsi is sincere, Bipasha Basu has nothing much to do and out of the rest of the cast, Raj Zutshi and Kushal Punjabi stand out.
DDDG is a good effort for a first time director but it could have paid rich dividends had it been slicker!

Tehzeeb breaks no rules in film making

It was on a lazy weekday morning that I caught up with Tehzeeb on a sattelite channel. Directed by Khaled Mohammed and starring Shabana Azmi, Urmila Matondkar, Dia Mirza, Diana Hayden, Arjun Ramphal and Rishi Kapoor in a guest appearance, the reason why Tehzeeb had caught my attention was its extremely talented star cast.
However, Khaled Mohammed misses the bus big time as far as filming Tehzeeb is concerned. The movie deals with the conflicts between a mother and a daughter. The mother here is Rukshana (Shabana Azmi), a famous singer and her daughter Tehzeeb (Urmila Matondkar) feels that her mother had neglected her and her mentally retarded sister (A highly irritating Dia Mirza) to pursue her career and that she was having an affair knowing which her father, Anwar (Rishi Kapoor) had committed suicide. Things had never been well with the mother- daughter duo even reaching a stage where the daughter elopes with a budding writer, Salim (Arjun Ramphal) and gets married to him.
5 years later, the mother visits the daughter and her family to renew ties with them and what the family members go through is what the film is all about. The movie has a very interesting premise, alright and it starts off very promisingly. However, the script loses its steam halfway through and starts fumbling as it progresses towards the culmination, something that was so evident in Khaled's maiden directorial venture- Fiza. Khaled establishes the characters especially that of Shabana, Urmila and Arjun very well in the first few scenes itself. The weak links here are Dia Mirza's characterization and performance and the casual manner in which the conflicts between Rishi and Shabana have been picturized. There is unnecessary focus on Arjun Ramphal's character as well and the track involving him and Diana Hayden only serves to increase your irritation.
Santhosh Sivan does not have much to do with his camera. Editor seems to have been on vacation. Production design and clothing departments deserve special mention. The biggest disappointment is AR Rahman who provides uninspiring music. The songs serve as speed breakers and have been inserted into the narrative for no rhyme or reason. Background score is also not upto the mark.
Performance wise, both Shabana and Urmila try their level best to induce life into their half baked characters with reasonable success. Rishi Kapoor has very little to do. Diana Hayden irritates. Surprisingly, it is Arjun Ramphal who impresses the most with his greek God looks and extremely casual performance.
To sum up, Tehzeeb starts off unconventionally but falls into the melodramatic mood post first half that spoils the impact that it could have created!

Pachamarathanalil is a let down!

The only reason why I thought I would be able to sit through "Pachamarathanalil" was because it had Sreenivasan and Padmapriya playing the lead (Remember, their last film together was the moderately successful "Yes Your Honour"). One hour after the movie as I am typing this out, I am cursing myself for having believed in the 2 actors mentioned above!
Let us get into the thoughtless premise of the movie- Sachidanandan (Sreenivasan) and Anu (Padmapriya) dot on their daughter. They are approached by an ad film director (Vijay Menon) to cast the kid in an ad film. In the course of shooting for the ad film, the kid goes missing. Enter Inspector Venkidi (Nazar) who while trying to solve the mystery, discovers that the kid was not born to Sachi and Anu in the first place! If you feel the plot is interesting enough, please go watch the movie at a theatre near you because I really dont have the patience to take a recap of what all I went through while watching the movie!
The problem with Pachamarathanalil is its script- there is no cohesiveness to it and it meanders aimlessly between characters. The direction is equally lacklustre. Add to that, the kind of dialogues which you dont even hear in serials these days, you start cringing in your seat.
None of the technical departments help the director. There is not much in scope for Manoj Pillay, but he has captured the climax scenes well. Renjan Abraham cuts a sorry picture as the editor. Art Direction is loud and unnatural.
Sreenivasan looks dull and disinterested. Padmapriya has been whitewashed to look good, but she ends up looking horrible. Lalu Alex repeats himself for the umpteenth time. Nazar is impressive. Lal and Meera Vasudevan in their cameos do not hold interest.
The worst part of casting is in selecting the child actor who has a critical role to play. The kid overacts to its heart's content and honestly, there is nothing attractive about the kid that would force someone to cast her in an ad film.
Debutant scriptwriter- director Leo Thadeus can consider himself lucky since he could convince Revathy Kalamandir, Sreenivasan and Padmapriya to cooperate with him on this one! However, I dont think the audience would be understanding enough.
Skip this one- you would not miss anything!!!

"Broad band"ed blogger!

That is what I have become today!
The day that I was looking forward to for the past few months has finally dawned and here I am blogging my way to glory with my new broadband connection.
Coming from the slow world of dial- up, I am just getting used to the speed that broadband offers! But, all you readers out there, I am going to be an even more prolific blogger from today onwards what with the ultra fast broad band connection that I have come to own!!!
I am loving it and I hope others too will!

New kids on the block!

2007 saw Neil Nithin Mukesh and Ranbir Kapoor! It also saw Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor! A very interesting, talented quartet who has it in them to carry forward the mantles of the families they come from.

Come 2008 and we have an eclectic mix of star kids being launched- Mimoh Chakraborthy, Son of Mithunda and Yogita Bali; Imran Khan, Nephew of Aamir Khan; Harman Baweja, son of director Harry Baweja and Sikander Kher, son of Anupam and Kirron Kher!
Mimoh’s debut vehicle “Jimmy” is already out (It is extremely disappointing, they say) and the boy has already been signed up for a couple of films. Imran Khan’s Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Naa trailors look impressive. Produced by Aamir and Mansoor Khan and with music scored by A R Rahman, this Abbas Tyrewala directed flick holds promise. Harman Baweja’s “Love Story 2050” has been in the news for a very long time. Kareena walked out first, girls went ga ga over Harman when his publicity photos were out and now Priyanka’s red color mane is the talk of the town as far as this futuristic Sci- fi is concerned, let us hope the flick lives up to all the expectations. Sanjay Gupta’s “Woodstock Villa” which marks the debut of Sikander Kher is another dark mystery from the stable of the prolific director and is being talked about for the hot scenes between Sikander and his heroine (I forgot her name!)
It is not that you don’t have interesting girls making their debut- Sonal Shah teams up with Emraan Hashmi for “Jannat” releasing on 16 May. Sikander has a new heroine in “Woodstock Villa” and the big one is definitely Anoushka, the young model who has been signed on by YRF to make her debut opposite none other than SRK in Adi Chopra’s “Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi”.
Impressive, all this looks and sounds! Let us hope by the end of the year, Bollywood can proudly exhibit a new set of stars in its galaxy who lets hope keep shining for many more years to come!
Here is wishing all of them luck and looking forward to some interesting movies this year!

Tit bits

I think this is a great idea to put together all the one liner stuff that I wanted to post on my blog:

  • I am glad that Sukumar Azhikkode shares my sentiments when it comes to the IPL that is in progress. If you want to check out his views on IPL, please read the editorial page of Mathrubhoomi daily dated Friday, 9 May 2008
  • Jams (my cousin for first timers) is back from his trip to US. He has some interesting insights to offer about US. Read them here
  • I might be off to my fourth trip to North America early next month. It is too early to say though
  • Akshay Kumar wins a doctorate from a University in Canada. Sab kuch bikta hai!
  • The wedding season in Kerala is coming to an end by mid next week. Thank God! I am tired of attending weddings though I love being with the crowd ;-)
  • Karnataka is back to the polls today! Let us see what further drama awaits us! S M Krishna, Yediyoorappa, Devegowda and Kumaraswamy are keeping their fingers crossed! Let’s wish luck to the citizens in Karnataka. Anyone they choose is not going to make any difference, poor guys!!!

Work- Life Balance

I am quite surprised that I am still able to balance my work with personal life even in spite of the fact that I have been working full night for the past one week. My work day (or should I say night?) starts at 11 PM and goes on till 8 next morning. I sleep from around 10 AM till 5 PM in the evening, but, hey I am still able to catch up with all the things that I normally do on a working day (reading newspapers, spending time with my family, checking my emails, going out downtown to get stuff done) and also keep myself awake and full of zest throughout the night shift.

Another big advantage has been the fact that I have been able to clean up a lot of things that were lying on my to- do list. The good thing about working night shifts is that one does not get distracted by e mails or phone calls or even anyone approaching for a casual talk! This has helped me concentrate completely on what I am doing at any point of time and even complete the work in half the time I would have taken in completing it, had I been working during my normal office hours!

The night shift is going to continue for another week at least and at this point, all I have to say is- I’m loving it!

Kerala SSLC Results

The State Board results should be out in a couple of days and the Education department has issued a statement that the pass percentage is going to be a whooping 92%

5 years back the pass percentage for state school exams was in the range of 60- 65%. If it has to improve to such an extent in 5 years, there definitely has to be a significant change in the education methodology and the extent of hard work put in by the students, right?

Wrong! Instead, it is all about the extent of leniency that has crept in to the evaluation process over years. Everything in this country is being dictated by politics these days and the government to gain mileage is doing nothing but boosting up the pass percentages by bringing in simpler evaluation techniques and alarming levels of moderation!

If you think that this is going to benefit the students, then you are grossly mistaken. All these students who pass their SSLC need to start with their +2. Now where are the schools in this state which can absorb this mammoth population of SSLC passed students?

Because you cannot get things straight, this is when one starts looking for short cuts. In the meantime, the education department and the school managements keep their bags open for the millions of rupees that they can make in the bargain!

Who is it that suffers? It definitely is the students who are going to suffer. With the alarming fall in the standards of education, these students are definitely not going to cope up with the pressure of studies as they move up and if at all they manage to get into a professional course after paying the huge amount of capitation fee, it is ultimately the profession that is going to suffer for they would definitely lack the quality and the skill set that is desired of a true blue professional!

I am not sure what kind of generation we are going to build in future after taking all these unnecessary and suicidal steps! All we can do for now is to keep our fingers crossed and look forward to the future hoping that things will change soon for better!

Food Crisis: Some thoughts

Now this is one topic on which discussions are happening left, right and centre. The acute food scarcity and the plummeting prices of food grains is driving the nation crazy. Fingers are being pointed at the government’s inefficiency in promoting agriculture and ensuring adequate procurement of food grain. So much so that people the world over are even predicting a third World War due to food shortage!

Looks like the predictions are going to come true. How else would one explain the stupid statements that have been made by George Bush and Condoleezza Rice recently? The learned duo who are ruling the world (or rather trying to) have come up with an idiotic idea that the prosperity of India and China is the cause for the shortage of food the world over.

While it is true that there has been an increase in consumption in these two countries coupled with reduction in the production of food grains, there is not even an iota of doubt that the statements issued by Bush and Rice are examples of sheer stupidity! Rather than taking steps to bring the situation under control, they are indulging in a blame- game and diverting the concentration of the entire world to a completely trivial issue!

When you have idiots of this nature in positions that matter, I would say the day is not far away when the entire World is engulfed by another war for food!

Annan Thambi is unbearable

I don’t want to waste my time writing much about this movie nor do I want to waste the time of the reader. I would have even tried not writing anything about Annan Thambi but the rage with which I left the theatre half an hour back forced me to pen a few lines.

Now, who on this earth is crying that Mammootty should continue acting till he dies? If at all he wants to, why is it that he gets into crassy, loud and meaningless stuff like this one? I heard someone from the audience commenting that this was like watching a Tamizh movie. I would not agree with him since I personally feel Tamizh films have achieved a kind of class in the past 5 years whereas it has been a journey downhill as far as quality of films made in Kerala is concerned.

Had this one been released 25 years ago in Tamil, probably, it would have been entertaining! It is sad and disheartening to note that such pedestrian fare is being welcomed by the audience in Kerala. There is not even a single redeeming factor about this movie. Routine camerawork, jarring background score, elementary special effects, confused editing, lackluster script and shoddy direction- you name it, they have it! The less said about the performances the better! The gags don’t make you laugh. You feel sorry for Salim Kumar, Biju Kuttan, Harishree Ashokan and Suraaj Venjarammoodu. The women are mere props with nothing significant to offer towards the story line. Rajan P Dev is as loud as ever, Janardhanan looks dull and uninspired. Siddique is the only actor who passes muster.

You feel like slapping the 50+ Mammootty straight on his face for having even attempted something as senseless as this one! If these are the kind of lead roles coming your way, Mr. Mammootty, we are way too better off watching you play extended guest appearances like the one in Kadha Parayumbol.

Please don’t even bother to take a look at the posters!!!!

An extremely attractive blog

A colleague and a fellow professional who recently joined the organization that I was part of send me the URL to his blog. I was not sure what to expect when I clicked on it, but boy, magical it was! A very sensitive writer, who can be emotional and philosophical at the same time, this is writing of its rarest kind, especially considering the fact that the author is a professional who has to deal with figures…It is after a long time that I am coming across something as refreshing as this on the blogosphere. Check this link out and you will know what I mean!

Yash Raj biggies in 2008:

Tashan did not really meet expectations but there are lots to look forward to from Yash Raj in 2008 especially after those horrible offerings in 2007 (Read Laaga Chunri Mein Daag, Ta Ra Rum Pum, Aaja Nachle and Jhoom Barabar Jhoom)

Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic (June)
Come June and we have Kunal Kohli bringing together Saif Ali Khan, Rani Mukherjee and a bunch of kids for “Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic” apparently inspired by “Mary Poppins”. Rani plays the angel to the four kids who are the victims of Saif’s indifference.
Plus:- Kunal Kohli after tasting box office success with Hum Tum and Fanaa, Saif- Rani- Kunal after Hum Tum
Minus:- Saif, Rani and kids is a formula that did not work with Ta Ra Rum Pum last year, inability to connect to rural audience and Ameesha Patel who has this knack of selecting the worst movies for her to appear
Bachna Ae Hasino (August)
Sidharth Anand’s Bachna Ae Hasino stars Bipasha Basu, Minissha Lamba and Deepika Padukone with the current heart throb Ranbir Kapoor. Extensively shot in Sydney, Australia, the movie is supposed to be inspired from “The Bachelor”
Plus:- Ranbir and Deepika, current heart throbs; Bipasha Basu after Goal and Race
Minus:- Sidharth Anand made Ta Ra Rum Pum before this one, Ranbir being compared with his legendary father and Minissha Lamba- a non entity as yet
Roadside Romeo (Diwali)
Cartoon caper directed by the yet to grow up Jugal Hansraj is the love story of 2 dogs in the voices of Saif and Kareena. Co produced by Walt Disney, this is something new for Indian cinema
Plus:- Voice over by Saif- Kareena, Walt Disney co production ensures good animation
Minus:- Jugal Hansraj who has not done anything worthwhile since Masoom (1982), wrong release timing (Diwali) and a concept new to Indian audience
Let us hope Yash Raj and Adithya Chopra have learnt their lessons well in 2007 and their next three releases in 2008 give them and us enough reasons to cheer about!
Sit through Tashan if you want to watch the trailors and let us keep our fingers crossed for the release dates…

Rimi Tomy- Wedding wishes

I consider Rimi Tomy as the most talented among the young singers of Malayalam. For a singer of her age, Rimi has considerably expressed her vast range in singing a variety of songs and has experimented with her voice in this limited time span to achieve awe inspiring levels of success.

Chingamaasam (Meesha Madhavan); Kannanaayal (Pattanathil Sundaran); Arappavan ponnu (Vaasthavam); Sharabhu pole (Balram v/s Taradas); Changathikoottam (Notebook); Chocolate pole (Chocolate) and finally Arumughane from Mulla- all songs displaying her vast vocal range and bringing out the power house of talent that the young girl has been.
There are many who in spite of acknowledging her talent find her to be an upstart, thanks to her behavior on stage, but I don’t agree with any of them. There are some who are born with that “IT” thing and Rimi is one of them- a complete “livewire”. To start with, the girl has immense talent and what adds to it is the fact that she completely enjoys what she is doing- something that is evident from the sheer energy and enthusiasm with which she renders her songs on stage.
I had heard K S Chithra once remark that she finds Rimi Tomy as the most promising singer from the current generation- an opinion that I completely agree with.
If you are wondering why I am going on and on about the rolly polly singer, it is because she got married last week and the wedding photographs were splashed across all major news papers. Here is wishing Rimi all the very best and a very happy and prosperous married life while I look forward to more and more remarkable songs in that high energy vocals of the extremely talented singer…
Way to go, Rimi…

Lacklustre Vishu for Malayalam Cinema

It has been almost a year since Malayalam Cinema had a great festival collection at the box office. Last Vishu had Sathyan Anthicaud’s Vinodayathra lapping up the moolah- Mohanlal’s Chota Mumbai and Mammootty’s Big B did decent business. Come Onam, there was nothing much to cheer at the box office. The only X’mas release that could make an impact was Katha Parayumbol.

After all this, the eyes were on Vishu 2008- Dileep teaming up with Lal Jose after “Chandupottu” for “Mulla”; Mohanlal- Meera Jasmine- Sathyan Anthicaud teaming up for “Innathe Chinthavishayam” after that hugely successful “Rasathanthram” and Mammootty- Anvar Rasheed coming together for “Annan Thambi” after the record breaking “Rajamanickam”.

Well wishers of Malayalam Cinema and hardcore fans were looking forward to April 2008. Mulla was out towards end of March, Innathe Chinthavishayam in time for Vishu and Annan Thambi immediately after that. The movies are out and so are the results. While I am typing this Mulla has already shifted out of the release centers, Innathe Chinthavishayam has been universally panned and is finding the going tough and Annan Thambi is managing after a mammoth opening collection- mainly benefiting out of lack of competition. I have not seen any of the movies but what I have read and heard of them one thing is sure- the lead actors, the highly paid directors and the money rich producers in Malayalam Cinema share one thing in common- that is complacency! It is as if everyone that matters has fallen into the trip of complacency and no one is bothered about trying something good, different or appealing!

To say the least, the Vishu releases and their box office performance have been anything but appalling and if this is the way, the masters of Malayalam Cinema are planning to make movies in future, all I can say is, the future is bleak for the industry and for genuine lovers of Malayalam Cinema like yours faithfully…

Sleepless on 10, Janpath

Rising food prices, rising inflation, inability to reach a consensus on the nuclear agreement, unpopular next generation and increasing popularity of the opposition party- none of these are reasons to cheer for the lady who runs the country! With the general elections coming up in the next one year or so, it is really time for the UPA to pull up its socks.

But, unfortunately, it does not know where to start. In spite of having the three best economists on board (Singh, PC and Ahluwalia) the government has not been able to wield the magic wand (Courtesy: Mr Sibal) on inflation and rising food prices. Karat is not saleable as far as nuclear alliance is concerned and the next generation’s Harijan hugging photographs have had no impact on his falling popularity. It remains to be seen how UPA is going to face the music in a few months from now and what is going to come out of the election results!

We can keep our fingers crossed while it is definitely sleepless nights at 10, Janpath…

The drama called IPL

The hype and hoopla around IPL has been going around for quite sometime and all those days, I thought that this was going to be a major flop. OK, the guys involved in the business where the mega richies of India- Mukesh Ambani, Vijay Mallya, Shah Rukh Khan, Preity and Ness Wadia, India Cements group etc. But, the thought of having round the clock cricket with teams in the nature of English football clubs and players being drawn from all over the world did not sound a hugely successful idea to me!

IPL has finally kicked off and I have had to eat humble pie- thanks to the huge media hype, excellent public support and fabulous sponsorship money that the whole idea is generating! But, with all this has emerged something else- high voltage drama on the ground! How else would you describe Harbhajan slapping Sreesanth on his face and Ganguly fighting with the umpire over a catch! The BCCI has risen to the occasion and has put bans and fines in its place but what has left me wondering is why the players did not react so violently when such incidents took place on international platforms!

Take the Harbhajan- Sreesanth episode for instance- when Mumbai Indians lost out to Punjab Kings, Sreesanth apparently commented to Harbhajan that it was “hard luck”. Now there is nothing offensive about that comment and there is no need why Bhajji reacted so violently to it. It is not that Bhajji has not been subject to such comments or even worse comments on international platforms- Andrew Symonds would know. But never has he bothered to raise his hand on international matches!

Bad umpiring has a history that is as old as cricket itself. Dada has been subject to bad umpiring decisions before like many of his team members but never before has one seen Dada making such frantic appeals to the umpire to consult the third umpire! Why is it that so much of drama is taking place in the IPL?

The answer is very simple- it is all about money, honey! T- 20 and IPL they say has revolutionized cricket. I would like to reserve my comments on that but the one single revolution that this whole exercise has brought forth is that it has reduced the sport to a mere money making mechanism and has raised the sportsmen to a level from where if they look the sport itself looks too trivial to them!

Yes, the Indian cricketers have definitely and completely lost that spirit to play for one’s country. All that matters to them is money, endorsements and the luxurious life that comes with it! Just like how the sport of cricket has had a major face lift- high society socialites and celebrities cheering the sportsmen and cameras permanently affixed on the posteriors of scantily clad cheer leaders! Honestly I do not have an idea which direction this whole sport is heading to!

Talk about revolutions…

“Live”ly days

Finally, that day did come! The day that all of us have been looking forward to, for the past six months! It finally did come on 1 May 2008, Thursday. The day my new project went live in office. I have been working on this one from September 2007 and even undertook a trip to Canada in November 2007 for learning the process.

From December 2007, I have been spending my energy on setting a team up in Kochi to replicate the process. I have been helped by eminent team members in all my endeavors in this regard and effectively supervised by some great senior colleagues. It definitely was a red letter day for all of us when the process went live from my organization and at the end of day 1; we received encouraging responses from the senior management as well as the client.

It’s been just 2 days and we have seen only the tip of the iceberg. We have 88 days more to set things right within which time we have to meet all specifications laid down by our customer. It definitely is not going to be easy but the confidence that we have gained out of our performance on the first 2 days is motivation enough to keep us going! After a lull, my professional life has entered yet another extremely “live”ly phase and I am keeping my fingers crossed!

Wish me luck, guyz!!!

Tashan: All style no substance

Yash Raj Films’ “Tashan” is the directorial debut of Vijay Krishna Acharya, the scriptwriter of the “Dhoom” series. It stars Akshay Kumar, Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Anil Kapoor in lead roles.

Tashan is the story of Pooja Singh (Kareena Kapoor) who works as an assistant to Bhaiyyaji (Anil Kapoor) a don from Uttar Pradesh who literally rules over Mumbai. Bhaiyyaji wants to learn English to impress his foreign clients and Pooja hires Jimmy Cliff (Saif Ali Khan), an accent trainer cum Call centre employee to train Bhaiyyaji. Bhaiyyaji makes bhajji of English while Jimmy falls head over heels in love with Pooja. Pooja owes Bhaiyyaji millions and Jimmy decides to rob Bhaiyyaji of his money. Pooja disappears with the money, Jimmy is caught and Bhaiyyaji arranges for Bachchan Pandey (Akshay Kumar) to get Pooja and his money back.

By this time one would understand what the movie has in store for you. Yes, you guessed it right. The threesome land up together and from there on confusion ensues since all the three men fall for Pooja and all of them want them. In her place, Pooja plays around with all of them leaving the viewer confused as to where this whole thing is heading. A couple of flashbacks later, it is revealed that Pooja has an axe to grind against Bhaiyyaji and with the help of the two other men, she succeeds in her mission.

With someone like Vijay Krishna Acharya at the helm of affairs, the last thing that you expect Tashan to be is logical! Like his Dhoom series, the script here also defies logic but there is a limit up to which one can take cinematic liberties and unfortunately for Acharya, he crosses those limits! It is as if Yash Raj and Acharya had decided whom to cast in their next project and then created characters around them, rather than working on a plot and casting actors accordingly!

Thus, you have Anil Kapoor mimicking Amitabh Bachchan of the 70’s and 80’s, Saif Ali Khan playing the phirangi, upmarket, modern dude and Kareena Kapoor playing the bitchy, unapologetic and immoral girl of today- things that suit of each of these actors like second skin! If at all there is someone who puts in efforts to make this fare enjoyable, it is the immensely bankable Akshay Kumar. He is in his elements as the crotch- scratching villager, Bachchan Pandey. The actor has worked hard on his looks and his accent and displays an honesty and sincerity which is lacking in the rest of the cast. This is good follow up to the string of hits that he has had in 2007!

Technically, Tashan scores very high marks! Anayanka Bose’s photography is brilliant, Peter Hein’s action choreography is in true- Hollywood ishtyle and Aki Narula has a field day dressing up the stars. Kareena’s size zero figure and itsy bitsy clothes allure the front benchers. She has been made to parade in the tiniest of bikinis for 10 seconds though one wonders whether it was necessary for the actor to stoop to this level especially after the immense popularity that she is enjoying thanks to her riveting performance in “Jab We Met”. Music by Vishal Shekhar is enjoyable and Sukhvinder Singh sounds good rendering “Dil Haara” and “Dil Dance Maare”. Editing could have been crisper. Art Director scores while choreographer (Vaibhavi Merchant) fails to impress.

To conclude, “Tashan” as its name signifies is full on style and attitude. If you don’t look beyond these two, Tashan could be entertaining enough for you!

Padmarajan- A master story teller

No, it is not because I have caught up with another of his masterpiece movies on any of the satellite channels, it is because I have read for the first time a novel (in fact, two) of his- the highly acclaimed “Rathinirvedham” and the fabulous “Manju kaalam notta Kuthira” “Rathinirvedham” first published in 1970 is a work that has stood the test of time and many would agree with me on this. A highly acclaimed novel that was later made into an equally acclaimed movie, Rathinirvedham has the writer focusing on a 17 year old teenager and his wet dreams! The diva of his dreams is his next door neighbor, the young, attractive and sexy Radhuvechi. Radhuvechi is married to a soldier and after a few days of marriage, her husband has returned to the borders. Pappu, our teenage hero is mad about her and dreams about sleeping with her all the time. How he finally manages to seduce Radhuvechi and what happens from there on forms the rest of the story! A brief outline of the story might sound like the many teenage erotic novels and short stories that one might have come across but what sets this one apart is the sheer class and identifiablity that Padmarajan lends to it. The setting of the story in an old Nair tharavaadu complete with the parambu, sarpakavu et al makes the journey easy for the writer. The snakes have been used as symbolically to convey eroticism in the novel what with the opening sequence itself describing Radhuvechi and Pappu witnessing two snakes in the act! The characters are very few and almost all the time the focus is on the two protagonists. The characterization is brilliant and the narrative style adds to the attraction of the plot. Rathinirvedham is truly a classic since it has stood the test of times and is as popular as when it was first published even after 38 years of the first edition. Add to it, the fact that the book was first published when its author was barely 25 is immense proof of the powerhouse of talent that Padmarajan was! Manjukaalam notta Kuthira (MNK) on the other hand deals with grown up people- a married couple on the verge of divorce, their daughter who is all out to unite them and an engineer who lands up in the middle of this disjointed family form the crux of MNK. This one is set somewhere in Mysore and starts with Prashanth, an architect landing up to renovate the old bungalow that belongs to Khan Sahib the protagonist. Khan Sahib is a rich businessman who is now leading a retired life. He has his set of friends and spends his evenings listening to music. He is helped out by Sarah, his caretaker who takes a bit too much care of him. Khan Sahib is charged up about his daughter’s wedding and wants his bungalow to be renovated before the wedding. Prashanth is the man on the job and the first assignment that Khan Sahib gives him is to renovate the stable so that it can house the new race horse that he has procured- Julie. The job is done and Julie is brought in. Along with Julie comes in Ms. Urmila Khan, Khan Sahib’s wife. Things are not really good with the two of them and they have been living separately. The only reason Urmila lands up is because their daughter would not get married unless she sees her parents together. The daughter lands up in the bungalow and along with her lands Sukanya, Prashanth’s assistant and the Architect on the job. The rest of the story focuses on the family and how Prashanth and Sukanya observe and comment on the inter relationships within the 3 family members. MNK has the kind of plot that could easily make a pulp fiction but trust Padmarajan to lend it a charm that is so characteristic of him. The plot unfolds in layers with the author explaining very clearly each and every character as they are introduced and establishing them very clearly in the minds of the readers. All the characters are modern, fiercely independent and highly unapologetic of their ways. It is here that one realizes the maturity that the writer has gained especially when compared to Rathinirvedham. Of course, MNK was first published in 1990, 20 years after Rathinirvedham. If snakes were symbolic of eroticism in the former, it is the horse that symbolizes it in the latter. Urmila’s passion for horse racing is what separates her from Khan Sahib in the first place and to have her back in his life what Khan Sahib resorts to is to presenting her with one! Padmarajan also tries to focus on how relationships get affected in modern day marriages where the husband and wife do not have enough time to spend with each other and what effect it has on the children.

What struck me most about MNK were the shades of the characters and the very simple narrative style. It is to Padmarajan’s credit that he could make a mundane plot feel extremely interesting! This definitely is a good read from start to finish!
